Success is a concept that means something different to each of us. For some, it might be financial stability, material possessions, or career achievements. For others, it could be measured by happiness, perseverance, integrity, or responsibility. At Starwood Academy of Frisco, we recognize that success is not one-size-fits-all. Instead, it’s a deeply personal journey shaped by experiences, choices, and values.
In a recent episode of The Child Centered Life podcast, hosted by lifelong Montessorian and administrator Marcy Bourdo, we explored this very question: How do you measure success? Through conversations with two of our Starwood alumni, we gained insight into how a Montessori education prepares students for the complexities of defining and achieving success.
Success can be measured in many ways—financial stability, career achievements, happiness, integrity, or personal growth. However, children often form their understanding of success not through words but through daily experiences and the values they observe in their environment.
Dr. Maria Montessori recognized the importance of preparing children for an unpredictable future. She designed an educational approach that equips students with critical thinking skills, adaptability, and a deep sense of purpose. These principles continue to guide Starwood Academy’s mission, ensuring that our students are not only academically prepared but also personally empowered.
Sydney, a 2024 graduate of Starwood Academy, shared how her transition to a traditional high school was seamless, thanks to the in-depth, exploratory learning she experienced at Starwood.
“I didn’t realize how much material we had covered here because it felt so natural and in-depth,” Sydney reflected. “Now that I’m at a different school, I see how much I’ve learned and how well-prepared I am.”
Beyond academics, Sydney emphasized the confidence she developed in asking questions and seeking understanding—an essential skill that has supported her in high school and will continue to serve her in life. Her experience with flexible scheduling also allowed her to pursue her passion for dance, reinforcing that success includes personal fulfillment and growth.
Anthony, a 2020 graduate, now college student studying audio engineering and business management, recalled how Montessori education nurtured his sense of purpose. For him, success is about creating something that resonates with others.
“My cosmic task is to make something people connect to,” Anthony shared. “Music has touched me in a way I didn’t know was possible, and if I can create something that impacts others in the same way, that’s success for me.”
Like Sydney, Anthony recognized how Starwood Academy prepared him to navigate challenges, especially during his transition to high school amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. His ability to adapt, think critically, and pursue his passion demonstrates the lifelong impact of a Montessori education.
Both Sydney and Anthony’s experiences reflect the core values of Starwood Academy: curiosity, connection, and purpose. Their stories highlight how Montessori education nurtures not just academic excellence but also resilience, self-discovery, and a commitment to meaningful contributions.
