December 25, 2016Two of the principles of Montessori education is that children must first acquire foundational skills before moving on to more challenging material and that they learn best by handling tangible learning materials. The three-period lesson is one example. This lesson can be used to teach toddlers new vocabulary words. In the first period, the teacher demonstrates the vocabulary words. For example, he or she might hand the child a magnet of a lion while saying, “This is a lion.”
As you’ll see when you watch this video, the child then places the magnet carefully on a board. The second period builds upon the skills of the first period as the teacher asks the child to point to each item in turn. The third period involves vocabulary recall. The child is asked to say the name of the item when the teacher points to it.
